Exclusive: 'Friday Night Lights' Cuts Two Players

Jul 8, 2008, 09:14 PM | by Michael Ausiello

Categories: Friday Night Lights

Fnl_l I've been dreading this day. Ever since Friday Night Lights' odds-defying renewal (thanks, DirecTV!), pessimistic fans like myself have been waiting for the other cleat to drop. And now we can stop waiting. Sources confirm to me exclusively that two of the show's MVPs, Gaius Charles (Smash) and Scott Porter (Jason), have been taken off contract and will only appear on a recurring basis in Season 3.

In a just-released statement, exec producer Jason Katims says, "Pete Berg, myself and our fellow producers have enormous respect for Scott and Gaius both as actors and individuals. In short, we love them. However, both of their characters have now graduated and in the creative spirit of the show, we have decided to give them powerful four episode arcs that will observe their characters as they launch themselves into the next phase of their lives. We certainly will keep the door open for both actors to return in the future, depending on the actors' availabilities. We know both Scott and Gaius will go on to have enormous success and we wish the best for both of them."

Total bummer, I know, but not a complete surprise. In the case of Smash, Katims conceded that finding a way to justify hanging onto his college-bound running back would be difficult. “The Smash story definitely creates a challenge for us,” he told me back in May. “He will presumably have graduated [when we return in the fall]. It's definitely going to require some finessing and the right balance between taking the right amount of poetic license, but not doing anything that would question the authenticity and believability that is so important to our show.”

Similarly, maintaining the viability of Jason – the Panthers' ex-starting quarterback who was left paralyzed by a Season 1 injury – has also presented challenges. One possible exit strategy has Jason leaving Dillon to start a new life with his pregnant girlfriend.

One thing you can be sure of: Katims remains committed to bringing both characters' storylines to a satisfying conclusion. As one insider assures, "He has too much respect for the fans — as well as both actors — to leave them hanging like that."

I would expect nothing less from Katims. But enough about me, I’m anxious to hear from you, my fellow FNL loyalists: Sad to see Smash and Jason go? Comforted by the fact that they’ll at least be around long enough to wrap up their storylines? Praying FNL gets some long overdue Emmy love when nominations are announced next Thursday? Comment below!

I am a guy, 27, hetero and all...but I love Smash Williams. His character and storyline, spearheaded by incredible acting and a million dollar smile, brought teard to my eyes. His angle put me on an emotional roller coaster all through his farewell episode. Hope, disappointment, pride and joy! Very few television characters have created a bond with the me as a viewer...Andy Sipowitz of NYPD BLUE, Ric Flair of WWE, and Smash Williams of FNL! Best of luck to the actor in future endevours, and congrats to the writers for making magic!

David Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 12:43 PM EST

Well, just saw episode 1 from 3rd season and I don't understand just what happened. There's a tremendous gap between season 2 and 3. And there are guys and histories that just have disappeared, like Santiago. But most important, how did the Panthers ended the football season at the end of season 2?? Season 3 doesn't start at the end of season 2. Very disappointed.

Rob Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 04:33 AM EST

They should've kept both of them and just have separate story for both of them, I think both of them were excellent characters especially Jason Street I think his storyline was underdeveloped. Well I look forward to season 3.

ll Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 12:02 AM EST

ok thats fine, totally legit even though i love the characters. but how come they offer no explanation for why tim, tyra and lyla are still in high school.as i understand they were seniors in the first season!!tim can be explained by saying he's...well, not so good with the education. but two years he got held back? and tyra, also not miss straight A's until recently but still, two years?!?! the most mysterious is lyla.there is no reason why she is still in high school two years after her senior year. do they go to school in i dunno...dillon, texas in england? its weird esp when jason and smash seem to have graduated in a timely manner and concern is expressed about the realism of smash staying around the high school scene. oh...and i forgot about saracen.yeah last season was his senior yr right?so he stayed an extra year too?the school system is really suffering in dillon. julie's the only one who is supposed to be in school. if am completely wrong here can anyone clear it up?

Casey Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 05:43 AM EST

Im just stoked that the show is back. I have started a group of mates down here in Australia who love the show and cant get enough of it. I cant believe the stopped it in the first place.

Jay Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 03:36 AM EST

The first season was outstanding, and the second season was almost as good. I definitely think the show should focus more on Matt being the main character rather than Tim Riggins. I would of liked to see Jason Street be incorporated into the show as a coach or perhaps as a counselor of some sort. I know it would be unrealistic, but it would of been nice to see a miracle and see him walk again.

cilla Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 12:05 PM EST

woww.. i can't believe this show without jason street.
this show is about him.
i just want to see someday that he can walk again.
i love him being with lyla. perfect couple!
oh my, bring him back!
for good..

vi Sat, Sep 13, 2008 at 12:45 PM EST

jason is always my favourite character on the show.I just can't imagine the show without him.season 1 is always the best for me! Bring JASON STREET back please...

Andy Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 03:04 AM EST

Hands down, this show is amazing! However I also think the show should stick to the originals. Continuing from where they left off last season would have been the perfect start for season 3. Also, one thing that was disappointing with season 2 was they barely showed any football gameplay and results! And Tami's high school sweetheart was unnecessary and random as hell. Perhaps because it was one of the last episodes of season 2 and seemed like a waste of episode time. Anyways I just hope Gaius and Porter get a solid farewell. Keep up the good work!

please get cancelled Thu, Aug 21, 2008 at 08:56 PM EST

the show sucks and minka kelly who cares she is boring blah!blah!!

Blah, Blah, Blah to minnie swirl Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 10:39 AM EST

Give it a rest. There's always BET.

Suz Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 10:08 PM EST

I am so happy to hear that FNL is returning and that it is also concerned with not jeopardizing the authenticity of the show. Good story lines move and they've managed to do so throughout the series. Both actors will be missed but the cast is strong and supported by outstanding writers. Hopefully the show will get the credit and attention it deserves this season. Tell a friend to watch.

Caitlin Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 02:12 PM EST

So sad to see this news, but I figured it was inevitable. Smash is college-bound and will hopefully see much success, and Street should be able to move on with his life, even if it takes him away from Dillon. (Though I still wish the assistant coaching had worked out, and I hope he doesn't pull a Duncan Kane by disappearing with his baby, never to be heard from by his friends again; the Tim/Jason friendship can't be tarnished like that!) But at least the two are slated for recurring character roles; SP and GC are too good to go without completely.

I'm a little skeptical about how they'll manage to keep Lyla, Tyra, and Tim around logically (because shouldn't they be graduating, too?), but I'll keep an open mind for now. At any rate, I'd love to see more minority characters on the show, especially Latinos!

Zan Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 02:51 AM EST

It was pretty much expected - Smash was going off to college and it would have been too much storyline to fit it in as well - that's where they went wrong last season - it seemed to chop back and forwards between too many storylines. Street was also a bit out of place last season and felt like he had no place to go. There is still a whole lot more of Riggins to see though - keep him coming!!! With his academic record, he could do the senior year over (maybe two or three times people!!!)

Linds Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 11:54 AM EST

I think the show is awesome but toward the end of last season (well I guess it would be considered the middle!?) - the storylines were all over the place. I love the Coach and his family - I love Tim Riggins - I love Landry and Tyra...but I couldn't figure out what they'd do w/ Jason or Smash. I hope they come back for a few episodes. So can someone tell me...will the show be on NBC again this fall??

bootsycolumbia Mon, Jul 14, 2008 at 09:28 PM EST

i don't have a problem with it at all. I'll definitely miss both characters (and actors), but it wouldn't make sense to keep both characters around. It makes room for some new characters, which is as it should be, since the show is about a high school football team. I agree about keeping Smash's mom on the show. She's a nurse, so it shouldn't be that hard to find a good storyline for her. Besides, Smash is leaving for college. Why would she go with him?

Sean Mon, Jul 14, 2008 at 06:15 PM EST

Does anybody know if Season 3 has been filmed yet. If so when is it due to air? I'm upset to see Smash leave. I feel like Jason Street has been used up though. I thought he would do great as an assistant coach, but obviously that was short lived. Not really sure how they are going to keep Riggins on. There's no way it's believable that he was a sophomore in Season 1.

doug tyrrell Mon, Jul 14, 2008 at 08:39 AM EST

hopefully they will not be cancelled after on 13 epiosodes via direct tv/nbc . if they do does anybody want to buy my dillion state champion ring i outbidded online along with a klye chandler autograph photo?

Kate Sun, Jul 13, 2008 at 09:26 PM EST

As long as it's not Riggins, I'll survive. Last season, they had too many characters to focus on. I will miss mama Smash and I would like it if the could find some way to keep her, but really the best scenes were between her and Smash.

proteanlives Sun, Jul 13, 2008 at 08:35 PM EST

I've been a Scott Porter fan since he was Casey on As the World Turns, and I think both he and Gaius Charles have given top-notch performances on FNL, so I will be sad to see them go.

And I second the calls for paying to attention to diversity, making sure that the complexity of class and race issues isn't smoothed over next season.

That said, I trust Berg and Katims and am looking forward to season 3!

TheVoiceOfReason Sat, Jul 12, 2008 at 06:36 PM EST

Sorry to double post, but I wanted to reiterate:

LOVE LOVE LOVE MAMA SMASH!!! I hope they keep her character. (The school nurse idea is mighty cool and would give those crazy Dillon kids some REAL attitude adjustments when they hit the school infirmary! Can you just picture it???)

At my own sons' football games, one of the mommas is a Mama Smash twin. She is kind of the momma to the entire team, including my sons. Sadly, her youngest son graduated so I'll be up there without her next season. Mama Smash's character, IMO, is a Texas high school football institution! BRING HER BACK, PRODUCERS!!!

TheVoiceOfReason Sat, Jul 12, 2008 at 06:28 PM EST

I was kind of wondering how they'd continue the storyline of Smash Williams without pushing the envelope, but Jason Street could have still been written into the show easily. I think there is more to the story since his presence onscreen was somewhat diminished for a while there.

I, too, absolutely ADORE Mama Smash and would like to have her worked into the storyline more prominently.

As for filling those obvious gaps, why not bring some more Latinos to Dillon, for cryin' out loud? This is Texas, after all. The kid living with Buddy is cool, but any Texas football fan will tell you that there is somethin' fishy about that Dillon football team. ONE African-American all-star player? NO way. NO Hispanic standouts on a winning Texas football team? As if. As a true Texas highschool football fan, I'd like to see it remain more true to the original story.

Lynn Sat, Jul 12, 2008 at 03:56 PM EST

I hate to see these two actors go, but I am glad to know that the show is going to be back on for another season. It just went off last year with no warning or anything.

minnie swirl Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 02:45 PM EST

It is unfortunate that Gaius and Scott will be removed as regulars because with them goes any diversity the show has. I understand that since they have graduated there is little sense holding them to the high school, but Riggins and Lyla should be graduating too shouldn't they? I don't think either of them were Freshmen or Sophomores when the show started. Of course, Riggins is the white hot sexy stud so he can't go anywhere so and Lyla is the white hot good girl so they don't want to get rid of her. That leaves the actor whose character is crippled and the black actor. Typical Hollywood. When Gaius goes so do most of the black characters that have any speaking parts. I truly love the show but it's sad that a show that hangs it hat on realism is now showing a world where only white, unchallenged people exist.

trace93 Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 02:02 PM EST

One big downer with Jason's reduced role is that the Lyla/Jason/Tim trio really seemed to be the bittersweet heart of the show.

Becky Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 03:03 AM EST

oh, and riggins is awesome too

Becky Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 03:02 AM EST

Well, lets hope that they do a good ending of the two characters & that theres lots more about Matt Sarison, coach&family,Tyra&whats his name... I love all the characters :( But I AM SO HAPPY they are renewing a 3rd season--no matter the wait!

Julie Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 09:37 AM EST

I am sure Jason Katims knows what he is doing and will do it well, but I will miss Smash and Street.

glen mac Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 06:03 AM EST

this sucks. great characters, good actors. good luck, gaius and scott!

Debbie Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 09:10 PM EST

I will miss both characters. Smash is a terrific actor. His first season girlfriend helped define his character. if she was with him again I think you could build a story this season. Jason was unique in that he was paralyzed and struggling with this. He was part of the original ensemble and it is a shame he will no longer be with the cast. I also like Rikins but his character is one dimensional, and I do not feel the story should be centered around him.
I love Coach, his wife and daughter.

Outrider Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 08:23 PM EST

I don't really understand why the writers could not continue the storyline from where they left off last season, so they could keep these two original characters. At least let Smash's mom stay and perhaps work at the school(I love her !), and don't bring any new characters in, we want more screen time with the originals, we only have 13 episodes...don't waste any precious time on strangers!

Drew Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 07:48 PM EST

I want more riggins and more buddy garity to make up for the loss of smash...and how about Jason Bateman showin up....he has been in workin with peter berg alot since arrested.

Sam Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 06:51 PM EST

I love the show and I will miss Gaius Charles and Scott Porter. Let's hope none of the other characters will be written off.

AS Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 06:12 PM EST

I don't really mind that they left. They weren't my favorite players. I hope that Riggins doesn't leave, cuz he is my favorite player! Hehe, (: !
But how would they come back in to do updates or whatever on their lives??

random00b Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 06:04 PM EST

The first season of FNL was amazing. Second season, not so much. If the third season becomes all-Riggins-all-the-time, I will be a former viewer rather quickly.

shopaholic Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 05:29 PM EST

It's too bad, FNL is the only show to accurately portray what happens when a person is suddenly paralyzed. It was deju vu from the friends who stop calling after the person leaves the hospital to the challenges of rehab and rebuilding a life that was able-bodied to adapt to new circumstances and obstacles.

Blah, Blah, Blah Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 04:53 PM EST

Give it a rest.

FNL Rocks Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 03:29 PM EST

Like so many have said, I get it, and am willing to go with it because these casting changes make sense, BUT. I really hope the writers keep an eye on the diversity issues that have been handled with such depth and matter-of-factness through the course of the series (with the exception of the Movie of the Week-level storyline of Smash and his sister at the movies- could have been written without all of the cliches). The Jason and Smash characters (and their storyline companions, count me as another Mama Smash fan, she has my heart every time she's on screen) were important in how they represent two subcultures of small towns that don't often get portrayed in shows like this, with lots of primarily attractive white people. So writers, keep this in mind when you're thinking about new players to showcase in the coming years!

MOM Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 03:16 PM EST

Stuff happens in life and if your attempting to keep it real then move them on. However, it's Hollywood the place where reality doesn't exist. The place where people get hooked on fictional characters that don't exist either. A place of escape....besides that having watched them move amongst the extras on set, converse, socialize to a point....they just happen to be down to earth kinda guys. They will be missed on set.

yael Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 02:03 PM EST

I don't mind!! I enjoy watching kyle,Connie and matt sarancen character.

andy Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 01:52 PM EST

I'm more than fine with that....as long as that means more screentime for Riggins.

Teresa Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 01:40 PM EST

Two words. Riggins & Lila!

MO Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 01:08 PM EST

As long as Riggins is still on the show, I'm a happy Panther fan.
Clear eyes, full hearts... CAN'T LOSE!

Lynn Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 01:06 PM EST

I understand the decision, and I will miss them somewhat, but it worries me about future seasons - which there will hopefully be! I can't do without Riggins, Sarasan or Tyra!!!!!

Melinda65 Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 12:06 PM EST

I will miss both of them--although Smash's ego, not so much--but it makes sense for them to leave once they're done with high school. Although I agree with JP that since S2 was cut short, why not give us the rest of it in the shortened S3? I would like to see the playoffs, Smash's graduation, the blossoming of Landry and Tyra's relationship, etc. It just seems that we miss so much by making each TV season based solely on football season.

As an aside, it's nice to see so many familiar "faces"--TV Gord, ShutUpRob, minderbinder, famin, and others whose names I'm forgetting.

Mike Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 10:25 AM EST

I'm with JP below , why not just continue where S2 was cut off?

We had 1/2 season in S2 and we get 1/2 season in S3 .. why not pick up where it was left off prior to the strike?

Recurring roles in a 13 episode season .. that can't be too many ep's then.

What happens to Smash's family too? I hope Liz Mikel stays involved in the story lines....

I'm sad to see these two get cut. :'^(

Smash and Jason graduated and have to move on. New actors to play new varsity players that moved up from JV need to be added. IS Matt, Riggs, Landry, Tyra, all seniors now? Who is Dillons main football rival?

JP Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 09:10 AM EST

I dont understand why FNL couldn't pick up where it left off! Let's see them going to the playoffs at the end of the season. I have never understood why FNL writers feel like they have to start each new season with a new school year. Why can't we see what the players do not being in football season? I know it would be just as entertaining. Not to mention, it would keep the actors (who are at the heart of the show) around longer. So Sad to see Smash go. And after this season, almost all of the rest of them will be graduated too- what then???!!

lisa Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 08:18 AM EST

I'm just happy to see FNL coming back on DTV(thanks!). I'm wondering tho, why don't they show reruns so we can re-catch up before next season? It's been so long, I've forgotten things.

Alex Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 06:26 AM EST

This is sad but kinda inevitable. Jason Street was very under-used in Season 2 and there was very little for his character to go.
I loved the energy and tension Smash brought to the show, but if he’s being side-lined now that he’s graduated, what does that say for the post-season 3 prospects for the show once the rest of the teen cast also graduate high school?
Worrying thought…

John Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 06:17 AM EST

Thank God. "The Smash" 's ego was too big for this show.

Rob (ShutUpRob) Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 02:11 AM EST

First off -- the cast was soooo big to begin with that it did seem like at least a couple of actors needed to go. Just wish that Smash's college-search storyline had been wrapped up, though.

Second: yeah, they wrote Street into a Corner (uh . . . ), so a happy send-off sort of thing would work best. Street's in a relatively good place (oy, the location puns!), so it would be better to write him out with a good ending like this than to keep him on for too long.

Third -- regarding Crash: given that Universal is experimenting with direct-to-DVD movies, I think that Universal, Berg and Katims should strongly consider doing a Crash-centric DVD movie to really finish off his college-search storyline and bridge the gap between seasons 2 and 3. AND to give those of us who don't/can't have Direct TV a chance to see some new FNL before, like, February of 2009.
-- Rob

Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 11:35 PM EST

i'm sad to see them go, but it's better for the show. it's annoying when shows try to keep all the characters together after they graduate high school. it works for campy shows, but not shows that try to be realistic like FNL. i just can't wait to see how they tie up their story lines.

will Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 11:13 PM EST

Easily one of the best shows on television. The departure of these two characters is pretty natural in the progression of the show, and hopefully it will help to streamline some of the stories. It felt a little all over the place last season. Still good.... just a little stretched.

**Sunny* to TV Grd Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 10:46 PM EST

That's funny!

Diggin' Riggins Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 10:39 PM EST

To Peter - He is not overrated - he's the best part of the show. Tyra is the second best. Then the rest of them.

Micki Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 10:27 PM EST

Scott Porter was the reason I started watching FNL in the first place and I grew to love the show. I will miss the characters of Smash and Jason, but this will give both actors more time to ply their craft. And at least we will get to see them occasionally in FNL.

*Sunny* Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 10:23 PM EST

To Rblues - Girl, you're everywhere! LOL!! I 'dig the Rig,' too! Shhhh! Love Smash - am sad to have him move on.

teach2u Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 10:19 PM EST

It is going to be hard watching FNL without The Smash! Jason really will be missed. It is my hope to see enough of them to understand where they are and where they are going in life. I just hope they don't jump up and go away without a true explanation. Smash could actually come home for important games. If he goes to Whitmore College he won't be too far from home.

Crystal Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 10:15 PM EST

I understand the reasoning but it still MAJORLY sucks. I hope Tim at least mentions what is going on with his BFF once in a while.

Alex Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 09:47 PM EST

Sniff, sniff, Jason's paralysis story is what hooked me on this show to begin with. But it makes sense, and I'd guess I'd rather see him move on than be some washed-up former football star who still hangs around in Dillon.

FNLfan49 Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 09:32 PM EST

It is so refreshing to hear something about this show. Its sad to know that these two characters won't be full-time, but I am glad they are keeping it real as in the 1st 2 seasons. I hope they write in Smash's family; especially his Mom. maybe put her in more scenes with Saracen's grandma. Just those 2!!

D Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 09:26 PM EST

Just so you guys know, I have met Scott and his gf, and I can assure you that he is not gay. I do not know Gaius, but I assume the same is true of him as well. Don't try and start rumors. Sad to see them going from the show though.

tinytvfan Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 09:16 PM EST

Just wanted to share in the FNL love and add my vote to those wanting Mama Smash and Herc to stick around! Love those characters so much. I'll miss both outgoing characters, but I know TPTB will give us another great year regardless. Go, Panthers!

Sam Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 09:12 PM EST

Well, Street going makes total sense to me, as it was already a stretch last season to keep him hanging around, especially after he quit coaching. It'll be tough losing Smash, though, since so many of his storylines dealt with the team, unlike Street, who was peripheral (yet very compelling). Plus, it's realistic for people to graduate and move on with their lives--I wonder if they will mirror the paths the real FNL players from the book had taken.

I also hope the show goes back to depending on the characters' relationships with each other instead of pairing them with guest stars like Noelle, Jackie, Carlotta, etc. I am so excited for this season and seeing which directions everyone will take--especially Riggins and the Taylor family. I love watching Riggins and Coach together--their dynamics are fascinating.

RBlues Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 08:34 PM EST

Oops, sorry about the double-post. I hate it when that happens!

RBlues Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 08:33 PM EST

I LOVE THIS SHOW! It says they have been taken off-contract, not fired. This means we will see and hear about them occassionally--just like real life. I agree with keeping Mama Smash--she is awesome! I love the school-nurse idea, she would be fabulous in that capacity. More, more, more Riggins--he is my guilty little secret!

Just finished watching two seasons of FNL on hulu over the last week. Wow, I never watched the show on TV, but am now hooked. What a well done show. It only makes sense that Smash and Jason get on with their lives, but I'm glad to hear there will be closure.

zoot Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 08:10 PM EST

what about Smash's family? Momma Smash is one of the most honest heartwarming characters ever! But no matter what, I am just glad the show was saved

Chris Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 08:02 PM EST

This truly is the best drama on television. I really hate to hear this, and I hope that the show can somehow finally get the respect and attention that it deserves.

Don Jariyasunant Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 07:55 PM EST

I definitely understand the logic behind this. Street is already 2 years out of High School and Smash has just graduated. It wouldn't make sense to keep them around all the time just for the heck out it. I'm glad to hear that Katims and his writers are using some common sense in creating their story arcs.

Steven Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 07:53 PM EST

While sad to see them go, it's the nature in an ensemble drama like the finite timelines they need to deal with, it was only a matter of time. Better now to lose just two, than to completely recast in a few years. At least we still get the delectable Taylor Kitsch.

TV Gord Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 07:47 PM EST

I was angry when I saw the headline, angrier when I saw who was being cut, but I understand now that I've read the reasoning behind it.

I would rather see this show maintain its creative integrity than, say, keep Luke Perry in high school until he's in his 30s. I mean, by the time Beverly Hills 90210 ended, the school nurse was doing more prostate exams than pregnancy tests!

shan Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 07:24 PM EST

I'm sad to see them leave, but not too surprised as well. Their storylines should be believeable and having Smash hanging around Dillon or following him around a college campus just doesn't seem realistic. I agree with Meg - as long as Riggins is on I will continue watching :)

jb Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 07:07 PM EST

Save Smash's Mom!

Kristen Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 07:02 PM EST

Jason was the reason I started watching FNL in the first place! There aren't any characters on tv that physically disabled people can really relate to. Everyone keeps saying how he doesn't go to school there anymore but he's still an integral part of the team. He reminds them to really appreciate the game.

Joyce Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 07:02 PM EST

Send Julie to finishing school in Switzerland.

Sandra Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 06:50 PM EST

Why not get rid of Lyla? I could totally do without her.

j Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 06:47 PM EST

shouldn't a show like this, be constantly adding new younger players every season ,an order to truely be realistic.

meg Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 06:26 PM EST

As long as Riggins is around I'll be happy. I wonder if this means new characters, or more time for the regulars.

mark Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 06:16 PM EST

its sucks they have to go but we dont want them to 90210 or dawsons creek the show and keep them in highschool forever. somebody up top said they were let go because they were gay. I did not know either one of them was gay and if they are i doubt that is why thet were let go.

Bethann Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 05:47 PM EST

I honestly was surprised that they were still around last season. All through season 1, I thought that Smash, Riggins, Lila, Tyra and Street were all seniors. Then they come back in season 2 and they're all still in school? It was odd to say the least. I do enjoy Smash and Jason as charaters though, so I'm glad to hear that the integrity of their storylines will be maintained even with their exit. I wish they would've done that with the 1st half of last season. What a mess that was!

K Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 05:42 PM EST

Why couldn't Minka Kelly(Lyla)go? That character is pretty much useless to me.

Dave Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 05:41 PM EST

My question is that in the first season they made such a big deal about Saracen being a sophomore as QBOne. Since Smash was the only one sweating his college decision, are we supposed to assume that Rigg, Tyra, and Lyla (assuming they will be in Season 3) were sophmores then too?

Bret Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 05:27 PM EST

sorry to lose smash, riggins better stay and I hope he gets with minka kellys charactor. And hat her Im a boreing christian is changed

Justin Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 05:06 PM EST

J wrote: "I think it's a little funny that they're writing off the two gay actors, no?"

What makes you say that, J? I don't recall ever reading anything about these two actors being gay?

J Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 04:59 PM EST

I think it's a little funny that they're writing off the two gay actors, no? I'm sad -- I really loved seeing both of them on a network show. I'm confident they'll both have long careers, though -- especially Gaius Charles who is just SO talented. Casting directors and producers, take note!

Whitney Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 04:59 PM EST

It only makes sense for a show centering around a high school football team to lose the players that graduate. It's real life. It would be unrealistic otherwise! Best of luck to the actors, though, they are talented so I don't think they'll have much of a problem.

As long as the excellent Taylor family stays intact and true to character, this show will hit a homerun with me! Can't wait for season 3!

As for the Emmy awards... I have long since lost any respect for their choices... they've already snubbed Connie Britton (seriously?) 2 years running. If Kyle Chandler doesn't end up in the final 5 (or 6) all credibility will be lost!

Taylor Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 04:47 PM EST

SAD!!! I loved Smash. Riggins better stick around, or I would cry.

habe Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 04:44 PM EST

My favorite show. Such good characters. Any one of the cast could be up for an emmy!

Renee Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 04:43 PM EST

Thanks to both actors, for adding great talent to my favorite show in the whole wide world...Sir, may I have more

Peter Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 04:39 PM EST

and why isn't the overrated character of Tim Riggins leaving?

Kitty Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 04:26 PM EST

I love the Jason and Smash characters! They were the only ones bringing a unique storyline to the show, that of a paraplegic and of an African American. Without them the show doesn't have too many controversies to focus on.

Renee Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 04:04 PM EST

Crap. I can understand the reasoning, but I've been waiting to see Street get to be a daddy. And no more Herc? That's just cruel!

Smash will be missed. I wonder who will take his leadership role on the team. Saracen? Riggins can't be leader & badboy/screwup. The new guy (can't remember his name lives with Buddy)? Landry, bless his heart, just isn't THAT good a player.

Sigh. I just wish we could keep them all. I like these guys. And I LOVE Smash's mama & Herc.

minderbinder Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 03:58 PM EST

"How is this exclusive. I just read it on TVguide.com"

It's exclusive because it was posted here first. And then TV guide read this story and posted it too.

Jenny Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 03:55 PM EST

Oh no, I really love both of them. Hopefully the rating will be good enough for a 4th season.

DanOregon Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 03:53 PM EST

I don't have a problem with Smash and Street being written out, but I am concerned how they're going to be able to replace the soul and heart that they brought to the show. It only got a 13-ep pickup, how do you introduce some new characters in that short of time?

Sylvia Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 03:50 PM EST

Most overlooked show on television. One of the best acted and most compelling on the air. FNL recognition is long overdue!!!!

dk Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 03:46 PM EST

it sucks to lose them, but honestly, there were times even in season 2 where it felt as if they were being shoe-horned in. watching smash screw up and then work to redeem himself was compelling the first time; it loses some oomph each successive time. as far as jason...they had to know the well was going to run dry when they initially made the decision to paralyze him. i respect them for making an effort to do it right rather than keep him around for the sake of having him around.

we all know that the taylors, and to a lesser extent matt, are the heart and soul of this show. so long as they stay intact, it'll all work out in the end.

Kate Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 03:32 PM EST

Maybe Smash's mom can be the new school nurse. I'd love to see her on a regular basis. I'm going to miss Smash but he was too talented to stay in Dillon. But I don't buy Jason moving away. I think he's going to need his family around. He should just get the coaching job back.

mo Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 03:30 PM EST

Sad to see anyone go, as I love all the characters. However, so long as the writing stays solid and we get to keep the show on the air, it's all good with me. This is one of the best written shows on TV. I hope they keep that quality going. They need to increase ratings so that it will stay on the air, but hopefully they won't resort to any riduculous story lines and cause the show to 'jump the shark'. That would be worse than cancellation. Long live FNL!!!!

Jordan Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 03:20 PM EST

I am so heartened to see so many messages on this board, awesome to see so many love this show. I will be honest, I am not one of those people who catch FNL every week (I don't have TIVO and can't always make it home to watch). But every time I watch it, I see that compared to all the other shows I catch on TV, nothing beats it. So yes, it deserves multiple Emmy nods. I will be sad to see Jason and Smash go, but I must admit most of my grief is over the fact that I think they are both gorgeous young men. That being said, I loved Jason's story lines constantly. However, there are just so many strong actors/characters on that show, I don't feel we have too much to worry about :)

mugsley Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 03:13 PM EST

Oh no- does no more Street mean no more Herc?? Shoot. i really liked Herc, he was a nice escape from the Dillon bubble every once in a while.

kana Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 03:10 PM EST

BUMMER! i think they're both outstanding actors, hopefully this frees them up to do more great work. Without Smash and his family there is very little color on that show. Which reminds me - if Smash goes does that mean his mom does too? Can't lose Mama Williams! Corinna rocks!
i see the point of the seniors moving on, but Dillon is a small town much like my hometown is, and my high school's alumni didn't get very far, especially when there were football games to attend. Just a thought.

Dave Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 03:07 PM EST

Does this mean less Mama Smash? I loved every scene with her in it.

Kelly Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 03:03 PM EST

I appreciate the attempt to keep the show realistic. I would rather see them go then have fake storylines just so that they stay seen.

Bill Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 03:02 PM EST

If Kyle Chandler and (especially) Connie Britton don't get Emmy noms, it will point out once again how pathetic the whole awards milieu has disintegrated into meaningless nothingness.

snarky Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 03:01 PM EST

amarty - the tvguide article actually gives credit to ew.com for the scoop.

Am watching the season 1 DVD, which is soooooo good. Will miss Smash more than Street, but I am with the others who vote for more RIGGINS - after all, in the words of Matt Saracen "What would Riggins do?" ;)

brunaa Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 03:01 PM EST

ohh, c'mon! jason had one of the best storylines on the show! now what's going to happen? a bunch of 'teenagers' trying to get in each other pants? [except for the taylor family, of course] it is going to be the new oth? for God's sake, somebody do something and let fnl be fnl again!

mary Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 03:01 PM EST

As long as Riggins fails I will be JUST fine.

I will sincerly miss the street/riggins riggins/smash banter, but I think the Riggins/Landry Saracen/Riggins combo (as illustrated beautifully last season by the Fridays drunken tuesday skip day) will fill that void.

also people, people, we still have Buddy Garrity and the trusty Taylors.

woohooo! go Panthers!

raprilc Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 02:52 PM EST

I'm not sad to see Street go. He was likable but not essential. Very sad to see Smash go. I loved that guy. But really, as long as Riggens is still there, I'll be a loyal viewer.

SarahP Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 02:52 PM EST

I understand, but I'm disappointed. I hope that the producers are serious about having them recurring, and I hope the actors have enough respect for the show and the fans to come back when they're asked.

I'm really sad about losing Gaius Charles though, he was so phenomenal last season and I think he brings a lot to the show.

Jon Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 02:50 PM EST

On one hand, it's tough to say that a character has "run his course" on a show like this because the writers have (for the most part) come up with fantastic ways of expanding all the show's characters. Jason Street was a fantastic character, and Scott Porter was superb in showing us a trapped kid trying (sometimes failing) to become a man. On the other hand, Jason is no longer a central character. He's out of high school, he's not in college, and he doesn't interact with any of the main characters on a regular basis. This was always an ensemble program and as such characters can fall out of the limelight without damaging the storylines. Jason will be "around", but he doesn't propel the drama anymore. As for (ahem) THE SMASH, he probably won't interact with most of the main characters either now that he's in college. However, he's closeby, so he'll show up occasionally, but can we REALLY expect a college running back to keep appearing @ high school? Even that would be a stretch

John K Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 02:48 PM EST

Not a shocker - I don't understand the outrage, people. It's a show about high school football and the small town the school is set in. Smash graduated and left and Street could conceivably leave as well. Life moves on, and now so does the storyline. And they'll be back, like most high school graduates, for the occasional visit. Art reflecting life.

jess Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 02:36 PM EST

OMG! How long does that mean we have Riggins for. Hopefully he'll get left back a couple of times;).

Kim Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 02:31 PM EST

Losing Smash is gonna be hard, but as long as we get more Riggins to fill the extra airtime I'll be a happy camper :)

Cami Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 02:29 PM EST

I don't mind Street leaving, but Smash! He is the show! At least we still have Tyra and Landry, but honestly, should I give up hope on this show? Is it just dying a slow death?

paige Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 02:29 PM EST

i understand but that doesnt mean i like it... but whatever keeps it from going and growing is fine with me.

Robbie Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 02:23 PM EST

Hard to imagine the show without them.

Brett Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 02:22 PM EST

I agree with the decision to let Jason and Smash go. It makes total sense for the storyline. I do hope that we at least see a resolution of the Jason/baby-daddy plotline, however.

amarty3 Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 02:20 PM EST

How is this exclusive. I just read it on TVguide.com

Amanda Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 02:20 PM EST

I had a feeling Smash would go, and I hate to see him leave. His character was awesome and funny and well protrayed. And NOT my Jason!!! :( I'm going to miss him SO much!!! I wanted him to get back together with Lyla, but I guess that's not happening now. :( I'm going to miss Scott/young Matthew Fox. :(

jbjz Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 02:12 PM EST

While I've grown to care about both characters, them leaving is organic. It will be nice to see an update on how Smash is maturing under the tutilage of his new coach. As for Street, when he quit his assistant coaching job, I had a feeling he wouldn't be around for long if the show returned. I seriousl hope, however, they at least graduate Riggins because being held back twice would seriously put a dent in his "hottie" status.

Dayana Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 02:11 PM EST

I had a felling that Smash was leaving the show. He was about to graduate and Coach T took him to see a friend so he could go to play with him onces he graduated. So unless he quit football and got himself a job Smash was leaving the show.

As for Jason, I am sorry to see him go too. He has a great new story line after he is going to be a dad. It would be very nice to see how he copes with being a dad .....

Both actors gave their all to the show and I want to thank them! Great job guys.

Nicole Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 02:07 PM EST

It's hard to imagine the show being the same without Street. He kind of got on my nerves, but his storyline was always interesting. And it's hard to imagine the team without Smash. As a character, his ego drove me crazy, but I think Gaius Charles is a great actor and it's sad to see him go. Will still love the show just as much, but I hate to see them go!

Daniel Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 02:06 PM EST

What? No summer season where they all work at the yacht club? Bummer!

laura - Moonlight Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 02:00 PM EST

I had a feeling Smash was leaving after all he was a Sr. ... but hey he can visit his mom and friends!
Jason has more to offer ... am sad to see him go.

Wish FNL all the best for this new season!

Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 01:58 PM EST

cx

Peter G Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 01:57 PM EST

Sad to see the characters go, but understandable for the reasons laid out in the article. However, Jason's name has been rumored in so many different movie projects I'm sure he'll be just fine.

kate Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 01:56 PM EST

I will be very sad to see smash go. Last season his storylines were amazing and I was hoping they'd find a way to keep him around for season 3. As for Jason Street, I'm fine with him going. There were episodes when he wasn't even in them and I never felt like, oh where's street? I love his dynamics with Tim and Lyla and his buddy (sorry, I forgot his name) and I actually enjoyed when he was an assistant coach, but I'd take smash over street anyday.

Noelle Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 01:55 PM EST

This is a bummer, I like them both, but at least it wasn't Riggins or Saracen, which would have ruined the show for me. I'm still just so happy FNL got another season, I can't complain too much.

Amy Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 01:51 PM EST

I'll definitely miss Street more than Smash. I feel like Smash grew up a lot and changed enough as a person that I'm OK with not seeing him day-to-day...I know he'll still go no and be "The Smash". But Street is (maybe) going to be a father, which will be such an amazing journey for him! I would love to see him go through that and deal with everything that comes along with it.

Cava Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 01:49 PM EST

Sad to see both characters depart! Does this mean we won't see Smash's mom anymore either? I loved her character!!!!!!

Ep Sato Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 01:48 PM EST

Funny, but this is something I made a comment about several months ago. They can't pull an "Archie" or a "90210" and keep these kids in high school for a decade, it won't work in that setting!

This season's got to represent the senior year for much of the cast, including some guys who I'm sure were already seniors last season.

This begs the question. Is the show about the Dylan Panthers (and thus, we can expect new cast members every year), or is it about the coach (ditto), or is the appeal the particular characters themselves?

If it's about the characters, then it's time to expand the show into college...wait. That's probably where the "creative and financial restraints" come into play. Nevermind.

Mel Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 01:47 PM EST

Definitely not going to miss Smash because it saves me from having to "Sookie" all of his scenes. Although Street seemed like the heart of the show and he made for so many memorable scenes like pushing himself off the boat. Ugh.

Rob Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 01:45 PM EST

I hate that they're closing out the Jason Street storyline. I was always really impressed that they followed through with the aftermath of the pilot episode for so long. As for Smash, I'm going to miss the character--but it's going to be refreshing to see a TV show sned a character of to college and NOT find silly ways to keep them on the scene.

Mallory Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 01:44 PM EST

NOOOOOOOOOO!!! What a bummer! I can totally understand this decision from a creative standpoint, though. I mean, it would change the tone and focus of the show to keep these two graduated boys around for too much longer. But, it bums me out, especially Gaius Charles. I think he's so talented and he's always been one of my favorites on the show.

I just want the writers to start thinking of ways to keep Saracen around after this coming season is over, b/c I can't even imagine the show without him!!

ivy Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 01:43 PM EST

well, i LOVE this show and am so happy to have it back, that i will make whatever sacrifices necessary to have more panthers, but the two of them will be sorely missed.
CLEAR EYES, FULL HEARTS, CAN'T LOSE!!

nicki Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 01:38 PM EST

This is ridiculous! I love the show and am so grateful for it's return but Jason and Smash are vital! It's a sad day my friends, a sad day.. I think they should have cut a in other areas and left these guys alone!
